The tricky ones in this town are the older Central and Lower North Side houses with a finished basement and an interior stair that turns ninety degrees halfway down. Anything longer than about seven feet will not make that turn assembled, which is how basement family rooms end up with a sofa that has been down there since the seventies and cannot leave in one piece.

We take those apart. A sofa frame comes down to a base and a back with a handful of bolts, and that is a twenty-minute job compared with an hour of wrestling and a scraped wall. If it is genuinely not coming apart - some older solid-frame pieces are not designed to - we say so before starting rather than halfway through.

Will you take furniture that's still good?

Yes, and we would rather donate it than dump it. Working, clean, structurally sound furniture goes to local reuse outlets. Stained upholstery and cracked frames do not - they will turn it away, and we will not pretend otherwise.
